The POP is an “ecumenical charismatic Christian community” that was founded in 1971 in South Bend, IN. The formation of the group followed the Catholic Church renewal (not revision) of the early 60’s known as Vatican II. The group was created alongside similar communities such as Word of God (now The Sword of the Spirit). These groups are all offspring of what is known as the Catholic Charismatic Renewal. The POP is ecumenical in the sense that they accept members from all Christian faiths; although over 90% of the current members attend Roman Catholic Church’s. They are charismatic in the sense that they believe in, and employ, such things as speaking in tongues, prophecy and faith healing. The POP has had some trouble with growth – while being in existence for over thirty years they currently only have approximately 3,000 members; this number includes active/inactive members and also children. Some of you may be familiar with Trinity Schools. The POP owns and administers three private Christian High Schools, located in Eagan, MN, South Bend, IN and Falls Church, VA.

I was a member of what the group calls the campus division - a section of the POP that is composed of mostly, but not exclusively, college students. The campus division carries out evangelism and citybuilding work of the POP. That's right, citybuilding. The POP believes the Lord Jesus Christ has called the community to build 200 cities and recruit 200,000 members in the next 40 years. This citybuilding idea was originally presented to me as if it were a prophecy from God, but now the POP has lightened the divine influence of citybuilding and considers it a goal. I'm guessing they themselves realized how unrealistic and audacious the plan is, and saving themselves from being labeled as false prophets, chose the secular terminology of a 'goal' to describe their work.

I have only recently found out about this People of Praise movement. I have never been involved in it, but someone recently come to work for us is, so I'm very, very curious about it. Please do keep up posting good information and links!
DONT JOIN! I grew up in this. RUN! I am in therapy because of what it did to me as a kid -
I grew up in it as well, my family is in the northern Virginia branch. what do you mean u are in therapy?! the build homes for people who dont have them and help each other out in so many ways with nothing to ask in return. they have summer camps and there is NOTHING you are forced to do that could be considered even remotely traumatizing.
if you're in therapy, it's not because of POP. if it was, all of us who grew up in it (myself included) would be in therapy. maybe people who happened to be in POP mistreated you, but saying that therefore the POP is responsible for their actions is like saying, "don't trust people with brown hair! some of them mistreated me when i was little and now i'm in therapy!"
Its pretty clear that God really wants people to live together, supporting one another in every way out of love for each other. In my 20 years in the POP, I've been loved greatly, offended and given forgiveness countless times, offended and been forgiven just as many times, but come out loving and being loved all the more! Hey, its clear Christ isn't "all in all" yet, but the more we live like that of the POP, and so many other Christian communities and churches, the closer that day will be! Chris : )
Dude, I ABSOLULTELY agree with you. I left in such bad shape emotionally, and they kicked me out because I slept with my boyfriend, also in POP. They failed to remember that it was not consensual. Think they did anything about that? No, they just kicked him out too. Way to be supportive. They said I could return when my life was in order. Again, way to be supportive in my time of great need. I wish there was contact info for the author of this blog. I'd love to commiserate.
Also, I married a woman and I would love to throw that in their faces. It's time they feel uncomfortable instead of me. I'm finally happy, being in therapy and medicated and understanding true love.
The problem with the People of Praise that I have is twofold
- POP subject’s children to their extreme beliefs AND create an unhealthy expectation of submission to their culture and suspension of disbelief in its children, affecting them often for the rest of their lives.
-POP does its good deeds and acts of kindness because GOD told them to do it. Or they may say they were “called to do it”.
First let’s talk about the issues for children born into a POP family.
Grown adults are certainly allowed to believe in any fairytale they wish. And not to pick on just POP, the majority of those who believe in any GOD most likely teach their children their same beliefs. But I am more critical of POPers because of the extremes their beliefs and group culture create. The POP is a close knit community and due to this nature and inter marriage among POPers they create an unfair environment for children to grow up in and prolong the cycle.
If you are born into a POP family some of the things I believe you will have to deal with are the following

1) You will be taught to believe that people can speak in other languages to worship GOD (gift of tongues), and will be submitted to pressure by Adults in the POP community and other children to pray in tongues as well, or feel ashamed or not a part of the club.
2) You will be taught to believe that people can prophesize, and that it is believed they are speaking for god, and giving direction and commands to his followers at POP. Even children will “give testimony” at their meetings, which encourages belief among other children as well as the pressure for you to show your “gifts of the holy spirit”.
3) You will have a good chance of being in social groups with only other POP children. Your Cub Scout group, your baseball team, your birthday parties, vacations, and bbq’s will be dominated by other POPers and their children.
4) You will see adults and children have the Holy Spirit take them over. A common practice I saw at POP gatherings was for a leader to ask all the children to come to the front of an auditorium style room, and the adults would pray for all of them, and one by one the leader or some adult would stand over a child, and proclaim that the holy spirit enter the child, and the child would fall down on a mat or pad that was waiting behind them. This would be done one by one for each child. The pressure these children feel to act out this obvious sham is overwhelming.
5) You will be taught how to pray and associate prayer and vocal singing/praising of GOD as a regular activity, and likely a daily practice. Again active participation is a signature of POP; it is not for the moderate Christian. Children and teenagers that show disinterest in participating are often ostracized, parents will tell you to stay away from those kids, and the children that show the most enthusiasm are often rewarded and praised as leaders.
6) You will be taught to believe that common and major ailments are healed by prayer, as well as just about any problem. It is incredibly common to hear among POP things like “I prayed that my sore ankle would go away and it did”, or “We all asked GOD for his cancer to go away, and it did, Praise the Lord”. Now to be clear, POP does believe in modern medicine. I never saw any situation where someone was put at risk because the family believed prayer was the only solution. But there is no talk of the healing or fixing of the problem that does not include prayer. For example, a POPer will thank GOD for guiding the doctor’s hand in their surgery that healed them.
7) If your family leave while you are a child or you leave POP on your own when grown up, you will most likely lose many and possibly all connection and relationships you’ve had within POP. There is a very clear line between insider and ex-insider.
Now these are certainly not the worst things in the world. But I still find it a deluded group that is putting their children into a very unfair environment, and that needs to change.

The issue I have is that they do these works because GOD said so. POPers believe they are called to this life of giving and self-sacrifice.
Now to be fair and not just pick on POP, I have the same issue with all religions that invoke GOD as a reason to do something, but since this is a critique of POP, I will put the following questions forth.
I believe it’s actually quite selfish and narcissistic to believe that GOD called any specific person to join POP. Why does GOD only call the chosen few thousand of POP? Or if GOD calls more, why haven’t they heard GOD’s calling? Or am I just not understanding POP's message correctly?
I truly believe that POPers are some of the nicest and most morally good people I’ve known. But why do POPers have to say and believe they do their acts of charity because GOD told them to do so? I would think most POPers would do these things regardless of any GOD telling them something (it would be pretty sad if it required GOD to tell someone to be good, in order to do good things), so why invoke GOD as being the reason for works? I actually believe that POP diminishes who they are as a group by being religious. If they were an organized secular group I would not be surprised if they could gain more influence and impact the world better with their positive works.
I hope this can be informative and spark a dialogue if needed, and is only my opinion based on my experience with the People of Praise.

My mother was involved with this quasi cult when I was a teen and wanted me to move from San Francisco to South Bend. She had the leaders talk to me and tell me I was not doing God's will and I must obey. What a crock, they should be in jail for child abuse. I think Fraga was the lady. It still hawnts me till today at 50 years old.
To understand this group, you must first understand how it all came to be.
History of POP:
For the Twin Cities group, it started in the late 1960's early 70's as a prayer group. My parents became involved around '71 and our family watched this group evolve from a prayer group trying to bring people to know and love Christ (our family witnessed the complete change in our own father when he became born again through this group), to essentially, a cult.
My Dad always said the community lost it's way when they stopped having prayer meetings. While we were part of this group in the 70's and early 80's, my parents and family were basically told where to live, how to live and who we could associate with. The final straw was when my oldest sister was told she could not marry a young man that was also in the community because the "leaders" did not agree with the union. (this was because marriages are basically 'arranged in POP). At this, my father said, 'enough'.
Don't piss the leader's off:
Our family was 'excommunicated' and all of the friends my parents had from this group were told not to associate with us any longer. People who were dear to my family were no longer allowed to even talk to us. Even after we moved and attended our new church for the first time, a community leader who also attended that church actually pulled my Dad aside and threatened him that we were not allowed to go to that church. (can you imagine?? Some bully telling you that you CAN'T go to HIS church??) Obviously, this 'christian' bully had no idea who he was dealing with. You didn't tell my Dad he couldn't do something. WE sat in the front freakin' row every Sunday.
Your family vs your POP family:
That same man that was told not to marry my sister has family also in the community. Now, one would think being family, they would spend time with each other on a regular basis... nope. In POP, your family is the POP members, actual family are no longer important. It was heart wrenching, my sister's husband was very close to his siblings and it was very hard on him to loose that connection.
How I see the impact of being a child in POP has affected me:
Luckily, we had a great Dad who shielded us from a lot of the crap that was going on in this group. But, what I notice is, I have no friendships from my childhood still in my life today (because of the excommunication), I have a hard time in social situations, I didn't allow myself to experience a lot of things due to fear. Fear of going to hell, Fear that God would strike me down, just plain fear.
But, I am happy, well adjusted, (as well adjusted as anyone can be) I am friendly, giving and kind. (traits I attribute to being my father's daughter, and NOT being in the community). I have a lovely, wonderful family and I can look back at that time and see this group of people for who they really are. And, I would not say they are 'Christians'.
It's heart wrenching to see so many people bashing something they don't fully understand, and although that is generally how this world of ours works, it's still frustrating. Catholicism and the world itself has developed immensely from the 70's and 80's when the POP was founded, so is it right to assume that the community itself hasn't? I'm not Catholic, so I can't fairly assume to know everything about The Church and all of their beliefs and all of the changes they've gone through in the last 40 years, but being in the POP, I am around Catholic POPers every day, as many who have read other comments here might assume.
I just want to point some things out about the community itself so that not all of the comments on here are negative, as most of them are.
The POP is full of people who care for one another, often giving members a feeling of being part of a family, I'd like to ask how that is a bad thing? We go through life dealing with family member that we may or may not like, but the point is that you love them no matter what and, in a good family, you support each other through hard times and rejoice with each other in good times. It is a shame that in the family mentioned in a prior comment was hurt by the POP and specifically one of the leaders, but that was over 40 years ago. Times have changed. (In saying this, I mean to address the comment "marriages are basically 'arranged in POP.'"
The schools themselves are, academically speaking, incredible. Recently the one in South Bend, Trinity School at Greenlawn, earned it's fourth National Blue Ribbon. What is this award? "The National Blue Ribbon Schools Program is a United States government program created in 1982 to honor schools which have achieved high levels of performance or made significant improvements in closing the achievement gap in schools where at least 40% of the student population is classified as disadvantaged... It is given to schools that are ranked among the highest performing schools in both reading (English Language Arts) and mathematics as measured by state or nationally normed assessment in the most recent year tested, regardless of student demographics." It is one of 9 schools in the entire nation to have received four of these awards. But the academic side of the school isn't the only thing that sets these schools apart. The teachers interact with the students, challenging them to grow in perspective. They read text varying from The Federalist Papers, Dostoyevsky's Crime and Punishment, Locke's Of Civil Government, The Communist Manifesto to works by Plato, Aristotle and Dante; all of the while asking students questions to stretch their understanding of the world around them. Their goal is to help students learn how to think for themselves, not how to memorize information to be spit back out onto a page.
It is true that a large percentage of the students at most of the schools are POP, but from my experience there, I found it to be one of the most accepting environments I've ever been in. There I met the wisest, most insightful people I've ever known.
I'd like attempt to bring some clarity to some of the issues that were brought up, such as what a child growing up in the POP is subjected to.
-I myself have never spoken in tongues and I know many others who haven't either, and in talking with them, I've found that they have never felt any pressure from adults or even others their age to do so.
-Prophesy. That's a tough one. It's hard to understand and I haven't ever given one personally, but I've never heard one that had a bad message to it. The "direction and command" given is usually in the form of "Hey, you know what would be a good thing to do that I think would please God? _____."(ex. "Love up your family, even if you are having trouble with them.") I personally see that as a bad thing! Giving advice and reminding your friends to do the right thing isn't wrong.
-Being in groups with other POP children- Is that bad? Growing up with other kids who have the same morals and understanding of friendship and respect that you do? I am personally incredibly glad I grew up in that environment. I have friends who are not in the POP, but I've realized that over the years, it's easy to drift away from people who don't have the same morals you do. I'm not saying that you have to be in the POP to be a good person. Far from that. I'm simply saying that growing up with people who understand you on such a deep level is not a bad thing.
-I'm wondering when the "fall over onto this mat" practice happened and in which branch? I agree that that's ridiculous and I'm sincerely hoping it occurred many years ago.
-I personally enjoy singing so this has never been an issue for me, but having both shy siblings and friends who don't necessarily like singing and being loud, I have never experienced a parent or even a minor telling anyone to keep away from those other people.
-I don't see why thanking God for a successful operation or success in finding the right medication is a bad thing. This kind of prayer practices being thankful, which again, I personally cannot view as a bad thing. I've personally seen healings take place, but that's often a "you need to see it to believe it" sort of thing, so I see no use in arguing that it actually happened.
-If you leave a school, or a church, or if you move, it is often the case that you lose friendships and connections. Distance is a difficult thing to overcome, even if that simply means you no longer see each other every Sunday.
I'm not meaning to attack the person who posted that comment, just to put in my two cents about the issues brought up in the comment itself.
When I first came upon this post I was unsure if I should give in and share my feelings here, being uncertain whether or not I would just make things worse than they already were, but I decided to go ahead because I'm currently in the POP and it's been the most welcoming, loving environment I've ever been lucky enough to be a part of.
I was a member of a subsidiary of POP and was trained by them to be a leader. It's a cult. No two ways about it. Total abuse of authority in their headship and submission teachings. Also, it is patriarchal and leaders have excessive power. Started from a good place, but got crazier and crazier. It is welcoming and loving as long as you do what they want. Once you start questioning, they become incredibly shaming and manipulative. So glad I left after 12 years! Lot's of healing but I'm doing okay now.
I was involved at a Catholic church / school in the 80's thru to the late 90' in Southwest Mpls. Mn. area. I was married then and was raising 2 wonderful,
beautifully and very smart children, and I was also involved in this same church.
There were several prominent families attending and involved the same church and school, and a few of these families were part of the People of Praise community. My daughter was very popular at the school and befriended a couple of the girls who were from the POP group.
At time I was going through a divorce and the POP group were trying to recruit me and my children. Also the POP group knew I was going through a divorce, I was not not interested in getting involved with the POPer's I already had a full plate.
During this time not only was I raising my kid, I was full-time professional and climbing the Cooperate ladder and also was in involved with the Catholic Community at this Church and school, and I was also going through a div... Needless to say my plate was full.
My daughter graduated from the Catholic School and started attending Trinity high School which was part of POP group. They stepped up their pursuit of recruiting me and my kids. I became very good at passive resistance and diversion so as to maintaining the needed
relationships so my kids would be able to attend the school which had a very good academic reputation. My daughter was also under some pressure also to join. At this time I was a single parent with full custody.
They had some for lack of a better word, an unusual grading systems, my daughter maintain a 3.6 grade average at the Catholic School, and enjoyed school and had a great network of friends.
Trinity had an usual grading system, they would drop a full grade point, example if one received an A, they would drop it to be B but for the national records it would show up as an A... Also working full time and a single parent with all the responsibilities, I was unable to attend sporting and other events, meetings and volunteer in there organization. In one meeting with the school admin, they tried a bullying technique's which does not work on me at all, and I pointed out to them there unusual grading system and there lack of understanding of people circumstances, and I said this is the way my life is at this time, and if its a problem for you, we will not return next year, and so I sent her to another private school the following year.
Also one day I dropped off my daughter at a friends of hers which was one of the POPer's, the mother asked to stay and chat, after about minutes her husband came home and accused me of having an affair with his wife, this was the 1st amd last time I met her / them. I began to realize there are some major issues with this group.
My parents joined POP when I was in high school. At first it was just a weekly prayer meeting. By the 3rd year it was a "covenant community". My parents lost their identities, submitting to the "heads" for advice on all details of how they lived their life. I was ex-communicated after being stalked and harrassed for 12 years. My father tried to initiate an arranged marriage within the POP. This really scared me and prompted me to stay away from the POP. While I was in high school I was led to attend the "Life in the Spirit" seminars. I still have the booklet to this bunch of sessions on POP beliefs and practices. It emphasized devotion to POP exclusively, any questioning or doubt was labelled as "Satan's influence", there was a session where the leader prayed over each individual in the seminar, and prophesied which "gifts of the spirit" the person was "given". We were all told that we had the gift of "tongues".
Prayer meetings involved a lot of mesmerizing singing and "tongues". First person "prophesies of God" speaking were done by various people in the meeting..e.g. "my people, my people...Satan is trying to tear you apart...you must come to me in unity, you must abide by my love and wisdom..do not question me..follow me." The authority of what was God's will was ALWAYS dicatated by the men who were "heads". Fathers were the presumed "heads" of their family. My father became very authoritative in a very irrational way. I witnessed many irrational dynamics going on in families and individuals who were members of POP.
I am really horrified to see that this organization is still going on. The "head" of the group I was in is still in power as the main "Head". I saw him abuse a boy that was brought into his home because the boy's parents had no money to take care of him. The couple who had the boy were told repeatedly by the POP Heads to keep having babies, even though neither parent had a job. They ended up with 7 children that they could not look after. All of the children were split up among different member's homes in the POP. This kind of control, manipulation and irrational behaviour and reasoning is rampant in POP.
The "love" POP has for people is very conditional...you must submit to their authority, or you are a goner. It has taken me over 2 decades to recover from what happenned to me in POP. My whole family was destroyed by it. Our father disowned us (his children) because we would not submit to POP's authority.
POP also protects its members who abuse children. They relocate them and hide them so that they cannot be held accountable.
There is so much more...but this is enough for now.
Stay Away from POP if you want to keep your life...find healthier support somewhere else..I know that this can be very difficult to find. Keep searching..and do not give up. This site is a great resource to begin with.
Thirty five years ago I went to a Catholic high school in South Bend, IN. The teachers were members and were heavily recruiting. I was asked to babysit. My weird-ness radar went up when someone else from the community picked me up, brought me to the top of the LaSalle Hotel where they were living in a community. Suddenly, they didn't need a sitter afterall, and brought me to a prayer meeting. It was a disgusting breach of trust. Shame on them.
So to add to that last comment: They lie about why they are inviting you to babysit, or say, join a home-schooling group, come to dinner - as a recruiting technique. they greet you with the "POP Glaze". Their facial features exhibit a strange lack of true emotions. It's a mask to draw you in like a trusting child where all your worries will be behind you. It's a trap where you give up your ability to think for yourself. I lost my twin sister to it and it has been very painful. She is still obsessed with demonology and has created her own compound of fear for her 10 children - that she home schools.
To the comment from Joseph: I worked at a school where one of our employees lived in a group home provided by the group. Her check was made out directly to the community! They have a network of nuns too I guess. I know she prayed over the children too, without the parents knowledge.

They are messed up and at 51 I am still getting over the POP cult-childhood. My parents still run by the brainwashed rules - although have left the "south Summit" POP group in St. Paul MN and now have become "Jews for Jesus." (Always on the fringe.)They disowned ma and my 3 kids after I divorced my "christian" husband whom I found out was with a MAN for 15 years before we were married (I'm sure during too) but took my ex back to witness and keep him in the "fold." I am remarried and moved far far away from MN. I am writing a book about the whole mess, affairs, abuse, communes, birthing babies in the bathtubs with 12 children looking on, making us turn all our money in to the "head". Cant wait till its published....

Oh man... This is sad. The People of Praise isn't for everyone, but I truly believe that Christian Community is. What y'all experienced is nothing close to what the People of Praise is today. I can't speak for it was like before the early 2000s when I first came into contact with POP. I've got my issues with what I've heard, mostly around "Authority and Obedience," and frankly would have never joined back then. But POP in 2018: I've never been told 1 time in nearly 15 years that "I need to do something." I've never been told how to spend my money, who to marry or date, how to raise my kids or anything. I freely tithe money to the community as well as my parish and have never been told I need to give money. It's freedom and the choice of my wife and me in where we put our money. I was more skeptical than anyone when I first came into contact with POP and now I'm covenanted and committed to living life in the POP and raising my kids in it. It's a great group of folks who are committed to each other for the purposes of serving the Lord and each other. If it were anything but that, I'd have left long ago. If it deviates from that in the future-I'll be the first to throw in the towel. But nothing for the past 15 years has led me to see anything different, even once. God bless y'all. I sincerely wish any bad experiences you had, had never happened, especially if it drove you further from the Lord.
I lived for a few years in a “women’s residence” that I have come to believe was used by POP or another strongly related cult to recruit. The description here of POP is perfect, including the cities it started in (as suspected members all have either emigrated from known POP areas or often visited there for some reason) but I was never asked to join. Instead, it’s as if I became their sineater and they were permitted to throw all their anger and rage on me, so I’m quite curious if this is a feature of this cult. Speaking up for myself only gave them justification for worse treatment. I was trapped there for 12 years as the community was told all kinds of lies about me and I was stuck at jobs I believe this cult owned (can’t prove it’s POP but again, it fits the symptoms) bc of the slander. Moving out, the community has been encouraged to ostracize me, and I have PTSD like you wouldn’t believe. The irony is that I only went there because they are a federally funded domestic violence shelter. Ha!
This is in Wheeling WV and the people involved in my 24/7 harassment seems centered around Vineyard Church, certain businesses (all strongly involved in the Pentecostal movement as well as the Charismatic Catholic movement) and Wheeling Jesuit College students or staff as well as members of St Joseph Cathedral, and yes, a few of them
have seemingly infiltrated the police, though I’m not sure if the entire force is aware of this or involved. But 3 are, for sure.
The place I lived in (I call it a cult bc if the shoe fits...) is on 11th Street. The city is fast filling with dozens of esp young people from other areas being put up in apartments owned by the same few landlords who go to these churches, and none of it makes any sense other to say that I think this whole thing is being paid for by somebody with unlimited $$$$. I was a member many years ago and basically grew up in "community", as it is called by members. My parents were covenant members until they died in 2009 and 2017.
Because my parents remained I was well aware of the groups evolution since the 70's. I have notes from teachings from the early years that are core teachings still in practice.
This group has not changed. They control your life, who I dated, my post high school education, where I lived, how I dressed, what I purchased.
I couldn't shop for clothing unless accompanied by another female member...they wanted me to dress more feminine.
